Short Summary

A cyclical competition where women from all over the U.S. compete for the honor of being America's next "it girl" in the modeling world.

I watch american since from the first cycle till cycle 18 which is this year. This program shows the reality of a group of ordinary girls who have the dream of being the top model in the industry compete together. The show are hosted by Tyra Banks, one of the famous top model in the world.

On the first episode of every cycle, they will show how the judges choose the competitors from 100 girls to 40 then drop down to 20 girls which is in the running of american next top model. I always love it when ever Tyra Bank said " You are still in the running of american next top model " during the part of every episode.

Oh well. Let me continue. This group of 20 girls will be placed into a same house together. Every cycle they will have cats fight all over and argument and all. This is because there are 20 person with 20 different attitude staying together.  This are some of the clip of them fighting or even arguing to each other.

Other then that, these 20 girls need to compete every single episode and each episode a girl will go home straight away when she got the worst picture of the day. On the 20th episode, 2 last competitors will need to compete to be the first which is really the american next top model.

I always like how Tyra Banks speaks in the programs. This video is about the first model who ever make her angry in a tv program.

In the video, you can really see how real is the program. They are all not acting. Thats the reason why this is so real, when Tyra banks shouted at her, I do feel how Tyra feels.

Mise-en-scene

Decoration - Background decoration are following the them of the photoshoot on that day itself.

Lighting - The lighting on this programs are mainly natural lighting. But during the photoshoot they use lighting according to theme itself.

Costume - Mainly the costume itself are wearing according to the style of the model themselves during offset but there style will never be off fashion because they want to be a model. But on the other side, costume are prepared by the crew while having a photoshoot by following the theme of the photoshoot on that day.

Location - The location take place outdoors or indoor such as studio depending on the theme of the photoshoot. Other wise, the models are mostly shot at the apartment or home.

Both of the image showing the consistence during the panel time. I always feel nervous while looking at them. I will also feel sad for those who is being eliminated although i'm not the one participating in the contest. This is how reality works.

The values that brought in the programs are tolerance and profession. They really need to be tolerance which each and other although they are competing with each other. It is always better to have a friend rather then a frienemy which means enemy. Other then that, some of the profession which they stay during the photoshoot are very good. They did not bring they own problems onset and stayed professional for the whole entire photoshoot. Some time they stay professional although they are having sick.

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene, a french term that means " placing on stage" or "put in scene". I found out that miss-en-scene doesn't not come from a production term. From the research, I've found out that the word mise-en-scene doesn't came just like that. The real meaning of mise-en-scene are the result of combining different type of professional together. Some people may think that the most important part of a film or a show are the directors, actors and maybe the editor. But the make-up artists, substitute, cameraman, people who prepare props for all the scenes, all of them have a big influence in the mise-en-scene.

Break downs on mise-en-scene.

Décor

Décor referring to the decoration of the stage or sets on the show. They bring a large idea on what is the whole show or film is all about. It is very important to the directors to bring out what they mood and feel of the whole entire show or film.

Lightings

Lighting stands a very strong part in mise-en-scene theory. By using different light can bring the different type of mood and feel to the audience.

For example, the image above is from a reality program called 'We Got Married-Season1'. The lightning in the show coming naturally above to show the natural of the show because it wants to bring the feel of reality to the audience.

Costume

Characters need to use correct costume that fits the film or the show to bring out the mood and feel of the character itself and also combining with the show or film.

For example, the image above is from a reality program called 'Youth Incredible' from korea. The costume that the wrist or singers are not wearing fashionable style but baggy and clothes who wears while doing work in the village. They use they cloths to bring out what they are doing in the show.

Location

Location of the scene are another important part to in a film or show. For example, the image is from a reality program called 'Giuliana and Bill'. All the location take place during their daily life. In the image above showed that giuliana is having fun playing a bartender role.

As you can see, miss-en-scene is very important when a crew start to plan their film or show. No matter what type of programs or film, mise-en-scene always comes in to the discussion first to make the whole film or show to be perfect.

Reality Programs

I always have this question about reality shows and drama shows. Aren't they just act it all out? How can they even act normally in front of a camera 24/7. Later on, I found out that reality programs are somehow like hidden cameras at home?

Spooky right? But this programs help us to understand or I can say know more about the contestant or artist itself. Reality programs are all around the world. For example, next top model from America, we got married from korea, Japanese star Reality Show from Japan and etc. Then, another question pop up in my mind. Why do people like to watch reality programs that much?

This is because they feel that the show are so real like our daily life, people feel like they are involved in it. People do get angry when the artist or model argue. People get to comment more often because this isn't a drama or a movie. People can feel that it is real, so they catch the feeling of the person in the show faster.

 ( http://www.sodahead.com/entertainment/has-reality-tv-finally-gone-too-far/question-1008779/?link=ibaf&q=reality+programmes&imgurl=http://ss2quared.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/reality_tv.jpg )

I found a news about why do people tune in to reality TV programs that much.

What accounts for the popularity of reality TV? People may find a certain fascination in contrasting what they think they would do in a given situation to the actions taken by the "real" participants — a group of individuals they perceive as their peers.

That's the conclusion of a new study that examines the ongoing popularity of reality TV. Unlike other shows such as news programs or sitcoms, reality TV allows viewers to imagine themselves as actual participants. The research appears in the September issue of the Journal of Consumer Research.

Blending Fantasy and Reality

In many of the reality shows, "ordinary" people are placed in exotic, unfamiliar surroundings where they are pitted against the elements.

Others focus on ordinary people engaging in common activities such as dating or home redecorating. In both instances, viewers are given the chance to compare and contrast their own lives with those of the shows' protagonists.

The resulting experience is a complexly constructed — and highly individualized — experience the researchers call "hyperauthenticity."That viewers may be drawn by the chance to mentally "test" their behavior against that of the actual participants contrasts with the common criticism of reality TV viewers as passive voyeurs.

Sometime people can remember whether they are watching a TV program because everything looks too real. Although some reality scenes may not happen on some amount of people but the reality programs will make the people thinks that it will happen somehow one day.

Oh yeah. Forgot to post which question am I doing.

Question6
Analyse a soap opéra or a reality show, considering aspects such as the 'mise-en-scene' (setting, look and mood), audience, narrative and editing. What values and attitudes are being communicated?
